This is the personal website of Alvin La(“I”, “me”), operated at alvinla.com. This page explains what information the site collects, why, who it is shared with, and what you can do about it. Questions? Email [email protected].
What I collect
Information you give me
- Contact form — if you write to me through the contact form, I receive your name, email address, subject and message. This is used only to read and reply to your message.
- Email — if you email me directly, I receive whatever you send, obviously.
There are no user accounts on this site, so I never ask for or store passwords, payment details, or addresses. (The site does have a private admin area for me; its login cookie is described in the cookie policy but is not set for visitors.)
Information collected automatically
- Server logs — like nearly every website, the server and its protective edge service record your IP address, browser/user-agent, and which pages you request. These logs exist for security and troubleshooting and are short-lived.
- Analytics (consent-aware) — I use Microsoft Clarity to understand how pages are used (clicks, scrolls, heatmaps, session recordings). Clarity masks everything you type. Visitors from the EU/UK are asked before it loads(nothing runs until “Accept”); elsewhere it is on by default and you can switch it off any time via “Cookie preferences”. Declining (or opting out) means no analytics script runs at all. See the cookie policy for details.
I run no advertising, no cross-site trackers, and I do not sell personal information — ever.
Who I share it with
I only share data with the services needed to run the site, each acting on my behalf:
- Discord — contact-form messages are delivered to my private Discord channel so I can respond quickly.
- Cloudflare — DNS, CDN/security proxy for this site, and email forwarding.
- Google — my email inbox (Gmail), which receives mail sent to [email protected].
- Microsoft — Clarity analytics, only with your consent (see cookie policy).
None of these receive your information so they can advertise to you on my behalf, and I never sell or rent your information to anyone.
Legal bases (EEA/UK visitors)
- Consent— analytics cookies and Clarity, for EU/UK visitors (asked before anything loads). You can withdraw consent at any time via the “Cookie preferences” link.
- Legitimate interests— analytics for visitors outside the EU/UK, always paired with an easy opt-out (“Cookie preferences” → essential only).
- Legitimate interests — security logs, and processing your contact message in order to reply to you.
Retention
- Contact messages stay in my Discord channel and inbox until I delete them (or the platform’s own limits apply).
- Server logs are kept only briefly (days, not months).
- Clarity data is retained by Microsoft per their practices (currently up to a year); deleting your cookies or declining consent stops future collection.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask me to see, correct, or deletepersonal information I hold about you — for example, a contact message you sent. EEA/UK residents have the full GDPR rights (access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection); California residents have CCPA/CPRA rights, including the right to know and delete, and the right to opt out of “sale/sharing” — which is easy here, because there is none. To exercise any of these, email [email protected]. You can also withdraw analytics consent any time via “Cookie preferences”.
International transfers
The services above (Discord, Cloudflare, Google, Microsoft) are US-based companies and data may be processed in the United States and elsewhere. Where required, transfers rely on those companies’ standard contractual clauses / data protection terms.
Children
This site is a professional portfolio and is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA). I don’t knowingly collect their data; contact me if you believe a child has sent me something and I’ll delete it.
Changes
If I change what I collect or who I share it with, I’ll update this page and the date above. Material changes will be flagged on the homepage for a while.
